Jane:
Hi, Sota. You came very early this morning!
おはよう、ソウタ。今日はすごく早く来たのね！

Sota:
Hi, Jane. My grandfather brought me here in his car. He often drives and takes me to many places, but I worry about one thing.
おはよう、ジェーン。おじいちゃんが車でここまで送ってくれたんだ。彼はよく運転していろいろな所に連れて行ってくれるんだけど、一つ心配なことがあるんだよ。

Jane:
What is it?
何が心配なの？

Sota:
He looks very young, but he became seventy-six last month. He may have a car accident some day … I always worry about my grandfather when I hear sad news of car accidents by elderly drivers.
彼は見た目はとても若々しいけど、先月で76歳になったんだ。いつか交通事故を起こすかもしれないって・・・お年寄りの運転による悲しい事故のニュースを聞くたびに、いつもおじいちゃんのことを心配しているんだ。

Jane:
Oh, I know about the problem. Will he stop driving a car?
あー、その問題はわかるよ。おじいちゃんは車の運転をやめるつもりはあるの？

Sota:
My parents asked him about that, but he was angry and said, “No, I won’t! I’m a good driver. Don’t call me an old man.”
両親がそのことをおじいちゃんに相談したけど、彼は怒って「嫌だ、やめないぞ！わしは良い運転手だ。年寄り扱いするな！」って言われたんだ。

Jane:
It’s a difficult problem. Are there any good ways to help elderly drivers?
それは難しい問題ね。高齢ドライバーを助ける良い方法って何かあるのかな？

Sota:
My city gives elderly drivers a pass if they stop driving. With the pass, they can take buses or a taxi with only a little money.
僕の住んでいる市では、運転をやめた高齢者にパスを発行しているよ。そのパスがあれば、少ないお金でバスやタクシーに乗れるんだよ。

Jane:
That is a good idea! There will be more elderly people in the future. We all have to think about the problem.
それはいいアイデアね！これから高齢者がもっと増えていくし、この問題についてみんなで考えないといけないわね。

Sota:
That’s right.
そのとおりだね。
